Cooperation with China

SwAM’s cooperation with China is mainly focused on areas such as integrated water and marine environmental management (Source to Sea), sustainable hydropower, and water and energy nexus.

We have a government assignment to coordinate and act as point of contact for Sweden’s engagement in the China Europe Water Platform (CEWP). The platform was launched during the seventh World Water Forum in March 2012 by China and the EU. CEWP aims to strengthen dialogue within various policy issues as well as research and business cooperation within the following sectors:

  1. Water- and energy security
  2. Water and urbanisation
  3. Water- and food security in rural areas
  4. Water management and ecological security
  5. Horizontal activities – Circular economy, SDGs, integrated water- and marine environment security (from Source to Sea).

Our participation within CEWP provides opportunities for strengthened Swedish cooperation with China on a number of water- and marine environmental issues.

Projects within CEWP

In addition to our government assignment, SwAM is also leading the the “Water- and energy security” focus area within CEWP, as well as a four-years (2018-2021) project, Sustainable Hydropower Use and Integration in China and EU (SHUI-ChE), focused on sustainable hydropower and integrated water and energy planning. The project aims to contribute to:

  • More environmental friendly and efficient utilisation of hydropower in China and EU.
  • Utilisation of hydropower as an enabler for promotion and integration of other renewable energy in clean energy transition and low carbon development.
  • Establishment of a long-term network consisted of actors from the water and energy sectors in EU and China for promotion of multi-stakeholder dialogue on relevant issues.

SwAM works closely with four co-partners within the SHUI-ChE project: The Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (BUKO) Austria, The Austrian Federal Ministry of Sustainability and Tourism (BMNT) and The University of Florence, Italy.

We are also collaborating with the Swedish Energy Agency, IVL and SIWI as associated partners within the SHUI-ChE project

SwAM is also leading the CEWP platform’s work (2018-2021) on promoting a more integrated water- and marine environmental management (from Source to Sea) in China and EU. Our tasks within this work package include for instance planning and implementation of at least one workshop per year on topics related to the “from Source to Sea” approach, as well as a comparative study about integrated water- and marine environmental management in Baltic Sea and Bohai Sea in China.
