Marine planning
Long-term planning is a key measure for sustainable management of the sea. Marine spatial planning can strengthen environments and communities, and contribute to poverty reduction and local economic growth.
Support in marine spatial planning
We offer our partners hands-on experience and expertise in policy, planning and implementation.
We collaborate with partners in East Africa and Western Indian Ocean to strengthen communities and environments, and contribute to poverty reduction and local economic growth.
Training in marine spatial planning
- Module 1 – Introduction to marine spatial planning
- Module 2 – The marine spatial planning process
- Module 3 – Data and information
- Module 4 – Assessment of the effects of the plan
- Module 5 – Transboundary marine spatial planning

WIO Symphony – assess the impacts of your planning decision
WIO Symphony for the Wester Indian Ocean is a tool for ecosystem-based marine spatial planning. It helps you compare cumulative environmental impact from different planning options. The Nairobi Convention and SwAM is developing it for the Western Indian Ocean.
Address poverty and gender in your marine spatial planning
Use our step-by-step guide to address social issues in your marine spatial planning, specifically inclusion, gender and poverty.
The guide is based on our framework for integrating poverty and gender considerations in your marine spatial planning process.
The authors have tried the framework out in practice too, through three pilot case studies in Madagascar, Kenya and Tanzania, with IOC-UNESCO, FAO, KMFRI and Environment for Development.
The draft version of the framework was included in the International Guide on Marine Spatial Planning by IOC-UNESCO and the European Commission.
