Environmental challenges require innovative solutions. With improved and polished technology, possibilities for addressing, and even avoiding, environmental problems emerge. Clean technology has only increased in importance for Sweden, both as a profitable industry and as a winning strategy for a healthy marine environment.

Clean Technology – A Winning Strategy for the Environment

SwAM's work with clean technology has been reinforced in recent times. In 2013, on instruction from the government, we completed a report outlining our efforts which have increased access to and demand for environmental technology and innovation.

Our experts' practical experience and competence with environmental efforts play a valuable part in strengthening the conditions for developing Swedish environmental technology for domestic and export markets, specifically regarding water supply, sanitation, and activities within the maritime sector.

Projects That We Have Funded

Part of our work entails providing funding to support projects directly aimed at technology development. Some of the outcomes include:

  • Seatrackweb – With more accurate forecasting of vessel movements and satellite imagery of oil drifts, agencies can more quickly respond to oil spills and even track the source of emissions. Today, Seatrackweb is used by roughly 80 operators around the Baltic Sea.
  • BOXWIN – The project aims to construct and deploy a full-scale demo model of a self-operating, wind-driven pump. The hope is that a future system of pumps will help to oxygenate the anoxic deep waters of the Baltic Sea, reduce phosphorous leakage, and result in decreased eutrophication, a benefit for all countries surrounding the Baltic Sea.
  • Clean Shipping Index – CSI is a web-based, business-to-business tool for cargo owners to find and select ships with high environmental standards. Shipowners also use CSI as a benchmarking tool to identify areas for environmental improvement. The overall goal is to create a demand for clean ships.
