Proposals for amended marine spatial plans for the Gulf of Bothnia, the Baltic sea and the Skagerrak/ Kattegat, has been submitted to the Swedish government.

The Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management was assigned to bring forth proposals for amended marine spatial plans to meet the need for increased electricity production. On January 21, 2025, the plan proposals were submitted to the government.

The Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management has been responsible for the planning process, which included a national consultation and review. It also included an Espoo consultation with neighboring countries. The Espoo report is available here. Pdf, 512 kB.

The decided marine spatial plans from 2022 applies until a government decision is made.

About proposals for amended marine spatial plans

  • The aim of the assignment was to include more areas for offshore wind in the marine spatial plans, enabling 120 terawatt hours annually.
  • The biggest change, compared to the current marine spatial plans, is more energy areas. Other changes have also been made due to new or updated planning documents.
  • The proposals specifies a total of 23 areas for energy extraction.
  • Approximately 26 percent of the total area of ​​the energy areas is found in the territorial sea and 74 percent in the economic zone.
  • Overall, proposals for energy areas constitute approximately 6 percent of the total area of ​​the marine spatial plan areas.
