Fiji and Sweden initiated The Ocean Conference in New York, 5–9 June 2017. The conference focused on Sustainable Development Goal 14, one of 17 goals in the 2030 Agenda. We provided supporting material and organized other events linked to the conference.

About the conference

The conference overall theme is the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14. The goal focuses on preserving and utilizing the oceans and marine resources in a sustainable manner. We and several other government agencies assisted the Swedish government with preparations and underlying material for the conference, as well as implementation and follow-up.

  • Keep up with the conference’s discussions by following #SaveOurOceans on social media.
  • An important part of the conference is engaging in partnership dialogues, where nations, companies, and other stakeholders will bring forward innovative solutions to global challenges.
  • The conference will hopefully result in an intergovernmental political declaration in support of joint efforts toward sustainable oceans.
  • UN members and other participants have the opportunity to contribute with voluntary commitments toward achieving SDG 14.

Collaborations

Our work is supported by IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute which is gathering good examples of efforts toward sustainable seas from the Swedish business industry. On 17 March 2017, a workshop was held to highlight these good examples.

We are also collaborating with the Swedish Institute for the Marine Environment in order to take advantage of competence from Sweden’s higher education institutions and to increase our understanding of the contradictions found in SDG 14. Two focus areas exist within the collaboration. We want to obtain an overview of the measures against eutrophication nationally, regionally, and, in certain countries, internationally. We would also like to collect and analyse the measures against marine litter, with a focus on developing countries and small island developing states.

We are also collaborating with Action Platform on Source to Sea Management on the Source to Sea-side event during The Ocean Conference.
