Department for Marine and Water Management

The department coordinates, promotes, and supports the policy work necessary for Sweden to achieve its objectives for marine and water environmental policies.

The department's areas of responsibilities include:

  • Environmental Implementation and Enforcement

  • implementing the EU Water Framework Directive, the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive, and, in the case of aquatic environments, the EU Habitat Directive
  • developing and introducing Sweden's marine spatial planning
  • coordinating SwAM's work with HELCOM and OSPAR
  • consultation under the Espoo Convention
  • participating in environmental matters in court
  • regulatory guidance under the Swedish Environmental Code
  • matters concerning biodiversity and land conservation
  • coordinating fisheries management
  • the implementation of HELCOM's Baltic Sea Action Plan (BSAP)
  • coordinating SwAM's EU preparatory work within the Ministry of the Environment's areas of responsibility
  • providing support within its area of responsibility to Sweden's Government Offices
  • preparing regulatory issues within its field
