We coordinate the environmentally strategic cooperation between Sweden and Russia on marine and aquatic issues, specifically marine spatial planning and river management. Operations are conducted within the measures adopted for Russia’s national implementation of HELCOM’s Baltic Sea Action Plan.
We support the efforts of a Russian national management plan for wild salmon in the Luga River together with a research institute in St. Petersburg. Activities include annual electrofishing and the operation of a smolt trap for migrating young salmon. We have also supported communication efforts in Russia to increase awareness of the river’s critical state.
We also cooperate with Russia on our work with marine spatial planning. In our assignment from the government to develop proposals for Sweden’s marine spatial plans, it is indicated that we are to cooperate with our neighbouring countries.
Cooperation at the official level makes it possible for us to influence the design and direction of Russia’s marine spatial plans. We can also help to bring a higher degree of environmental consideration from a Baltic Sea perspective.
