New tool on risks and side effects in conservation

On March 10, WiMS and SwAM, the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management hosted the training webinar “High Tides, Hidden Risks and Who Gets Left Out?” in connection with International Women’s Day.

During the session, participants explored why and how to assess risks and potential negative side effects in conservation projects, with a particular focus on assessing gender and diversity perspectives.

Guided by moderator Oscar Maldonado, participants applied their new knowledge in a fictional case study involving the implementation of a fishing closure within a Marine Protected Area.

Tool launch: Risks and side effects in conservation project

The webinar also launched the updated R+NSE tool pdf, 5.7 MB., Risk and Negative Side Effect Assessment in Conservation Projects.

The R+NSE tool gives practical guidance on how to integrate gender and diversity considerations into conservation projects. The tool can be useful to conservation practitioners in project planning, risk assessment and community dialogue.

The tool was developed by Oscar Maldonado with support from SwAM.

This work is made possible through SwAM Ocean, our agency’s international initiative to promote a sustainable and climate-adapted blue economy in partner regions.

While the programme has a global perspective, it places particular emphasis on the Western Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia, where countries face major challenges linked to overexploitation of marine resources, climate change, and widespread poverty.
